Trauma to teeth can happen so fast … a fall off a bike, an incident while playing sports, an auto accident … any of these things can result in traumatic damage to your child’s teeth. Being prepared is critical to the outcome of any of these events. Carrying the name and phone number of your children’s emergency dentist, as well as keeping this information posted for caregivers, can mean the difference between saving your child’s teeth and costly, time consuming, and maybe uncomfortable dental work for your child.

When selecting your pediatric dentistry provider, there is a primary question that may dictate who you select. And that is the availability of emergency care for your child. If your child’s dentist does not have after hour’s emergency care, it is imperative to obtain the information you may need if your child is faced with needing dental care outside of normal hours of operation.

Since many sporting and extracurricular events occur in the evening and on week-ends, an accidental fall or getting hit in the mouth is more likely to occur after hours requiring seeing your children’s emergency dentist at an inopportune time. You should be able to make a quick call and experience positive results … if not, you may be forced to go to the emergency room where hours of waiting can have a devastating impact on your child’s dental health.

Do you know what to do if your child experiences a dental trauma? If your child’s tooth is knocked out, do you or your caregiver know the correct action to take? If easily achieved, replace the tooth and hold in place until you can get to the dentist. If unable to replace the tooth, put the tooth in a glass of milk or cool water being careful not to handle the roots. You have about one hour to get the tooth put back in place in hopes of saving it.

Injury to the mouth can bleed excessively making an injury appear more serious than it really is. Will you remain in control, or panic?  Asking questions of your dental provider in advance of a problem may help you be prepared in the event of a dental injury.

The correct response can mean the difference between success and failure; preparation is critical when it can impact your child’s dental future and health. For more tips on emergency dental care, contact our team at Fort Worth Children’s Dentistry today.
